Fair Trade USA; Coffee Corporations – the Debate Goes On

The debate continues to gather pace around the direction that fair trade is going. This article in the New York Times attempts to unpick the split from FLO by Fair Trade USA and the reaction to it from both the ethical trade sector, such as Equal Exchange (USA) and the corporate sector, including Starbucks. Fair Trade USA argue that by opening up their new Fair Trade certification to (coffee) plantations, they are safeguarding the future growth of Fair Trade and enabling workers on plantations to benefit. The ethical trade sector accuse Fair Trade USA of selling out to pressure from corporations, such as Starbucks, Nestle etc. and of being motivated by the increased certification fee income they will be able to generate.

The debate rages on – tell us what you think. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/24/business/as-fair-trade-movement-grows-a-dispute-over-its-direction.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1
