Is the fair trade agenda dictated by certifying bodies and corporations?
Geoff White – head of a trade justice movement in New Zealand was recently interviewed for a local coffee company blog. He gave voice to the concerns a lot of consumers and coffee industry people alike share – that Fair Trade certifiers are dictating what trading fairly is and should be; that they many great coffee companies struggle to tell their story because they do not carry the fair trade “badge”, whilst major corporations do the minimum required to get the badge on their products, effectively green-washing their brands. Are we going to get back to judging businesses by what they do and how they behave rather than by the badges they have managed to get put on one or two of their products? Tell us what you think…..
